I had originally picked this English class because all of the ENC-1102 classes were full and my friend had recommend Professor Lang since she had taken her course in the summer. I was entering this class with the impression that the teacher was extremely friendly and understanding which I found out is pretty much true. The topic of this specific section interested me since I was very involved with community service while I was in high school. I wasn’t really sure how a course could do some form of community action, but now that I have finished this course I see that such a big impact was made on the community from this class. The experience of volunteering while reflecting on it was really intriguing to me and I feel like because I had to right so many reflections on this I appreciated it more.

This course benefitted me in more ways than one. For starters, my reading and writing skills have been greatly enhanced. I was so used to writing in the conventional 5-paragraph method and this course made me challenged conventionality and in the long run it was a great thing. It is going to be a huge asset to me later on in my college career and in life since I know can write in numerous amounts of ways. All of these reflective essays really made me sit down and think of different ways that I can enhance my writing overall and the feedback I received from my peers and professor also helped me along my path to enhancement. My reading also was heightened since this course taught me more about rhetoric. I know look into everything I read in a much deeper way since some things have an underlying message that is not easily seen. While volunteering at the Museum of Florida History I learned that there are so many ways that I can give back to the community. Some of the ways may seem minuscule, however there are always ways that I can make my community a better place. I also found out that museums give back to the community in such a larger scale than people give it credit for. Museums help to give insight to people and expand their vast knowledge of history and arts.

On top of benefitting me in so many ways, taking this course also changed me in ways. My thought process regarding communities has changed but not as drastically has I had thought it would. The only thing that changed for me about communities was that I know see that there are so many ways that they can be enhanced and it brings people together to improve it. I know think about communities differently also and I want to continue to give back to my community once I am done with this course. As a community member I feel like it is my obligation to continue to give back and get more people to assist me in improving this community.

If I were to design this class I would only change a few things. For starters, I would increase the amount of time that the students are required to volunteer at their organizations. For this class we were required to volunteer for 5 hours and in my opinion I feel as if this is not enough time to leave as big an impact as we could. Making the students volunteer for 10-15 hours seems much more practical so that the students leave a bigger imprint on their organizations and on the community as a whole. The most important thing I learned in this class is how to appeal to people and target what they are interested in. This will help me along in life since I am a marketing major and that is in essence what I want to do for the rest of my life. It is not easy to figure out what people want and how to get them to want things, but this class helped me make that process easier and I will be bale to use that skill for the rest of my life.
